To mark our move to Bristol we are delighted to introduce this year a competition to find talented young composers in the Bristol and North East Somerset area.

We are pleased to have the support of the
Bristol University Department of Music and the leader of our judges panel is Professor John Pickard, one of this country's notable contemporary composers.

The Competition
Who Can Enter?

We have two categories:

  • For age group 15 - 18
  • For age group 14 and under

(as of 1st July 2017)

The CLOSING DATE for entries is 30th June 2017
What should I write?

We invite you to write a new piece of music to be between two and four minutes in length.

Your work can be in any style you like, for example: classical, popular, contemporary, jazz, etc., etc..

We do not want to put any restrictions on your creativity - but we will offer some helpful ideas to everyone who requests an entry form.
Which instruments should I write for?

The winning pieces will be performed at the final concert of this year's NB Music Course. Music should therefore be written for ANY combination of the following instruments. These are the instruments we can guarantee to provide for a performance from among our professional course leaders:

Violin
Viola
Trumpet
Trombone
Oboe
Flute
Piano
Tuned and untuned percussion
Church organ
Any or all voices - Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass.

You do NOT have to include all of the above. You could, for example write:
- a duet for piano and flute,
- a trio for violin, viola and oboe,
- a song for voice, piano and a third instrument,
- a song for a choir of any combination of voices,
- etc., etc..

We can consider other instruments if you are able to arrange competent players for performance. For example if you were a good harpist and wished to perform your own piece then we would be happy to consider your entry.
What are the competition prizes?

In each category we will offer:

A first prize of:
- £50 in cash
- The NB Music, Young Composer 2017 trophy.
- A recording of your composition played by our professional players.
- A free place on the NB Music Course week for yourself and a friend or sibling.
